STEM For Social Good Tour

About the Event

This past weekend, the Southeast TX Coalition was incredibly fortunate to be able to attend the first stop of the Girl Up STEM For Social Good Tour at Houston, Texas. At this event, we witnessed #GIRLHEROs speak of their amazing accomplishments — from a Scientist who established “SWAN”, or the Supporting Women in NASA organization, to a VP of Technology from India who overcame all the obstacles that came her way. Through this, we learned the power of support from the people in your life, confidence, and simply believing in yourself. After, we were able to work hands-on with STEM activities that were intertwined with curating social good from the STEM for Social Good Toolkit. We managed to “Light It Up” with circuits on statistics of the best places to work for women in the world and created fun games that addressed social issues like healthcare for women by utilizing physics elements, like inertia. We finished the day by taking pictures and reflecting on the power of an atmosphere designed for girls. The Girl Up STEM For Social Good Tour taught us how to utilize our strengths for positive change in the community, how to defy the norm, and how to take charge of our futures. As STEMinists, we imagined a future where no girl has fear of ridicule or failure when pursuing a STEM career. “If not me, who? If not now, when?” — Emma Watson
